Cellular Immunity: Macrophages & Cytotoxic T Cells Capture from Book

Macrophage-Lymphocyte Interaction & Cytotoxic T Cells

#boundingbox

Let’s explore how macrophages interact with lymphocytes and the critical role of cytotoxic T cells:

  • Macrophage-lymphocyte interaction: Th1 cells secrete IFN-γ, enhancing the ability of monocytes and macrophages to kill ingested microbes. This interaction is further enhanced by T cell CD40L binding to CD40 on macrophages, which also activate lymphocytes via antigen presentation.
  • Cytotoxic T cells: These cells kill virus-infected, neoplastic, and donor graft cells by inducing apoptosis. They release cytotoxic granules containing perforin and granzyme B. Cytotoxic T cells have CD8, which binds to MHC I on virus-infected cells.
